Visit any salsa club and you'll hear an occasional 4-beat tune that's very romantic, and has couples locking bodies on the dance floor.

What is it? It's Bachata. Bachata is a form of music and dance that originated in the countryside and rural marginal neighborhoods of the Dominican Republic. Its subjects are usually romantic; especially of tales of heartbreak.

Bachata music has a slow tempo, with a merry or sometimes sad tune played out by guitars. The dance itself is sensual, with lots of hip movement. As with salsa, the step timing is three steps and then a one-beat pause, which is characterized by the sensual thrust of the hips to one side.

Although the basic step is easy, as with all Latin dances, the hardest part is getting the body action. Without the hip and body action, you are not dancing the Bachata.

In this 2-hr x 4-lesson workshop, you'll learn how to dance Bachata, with the right body movement, Dominican Republic style. As Bachata is all about leading and following using the upper and lower body, much emphasis will be placed on the body movement which will be broken down in a clear, step-wise manner.

Partnerwork will include patterns, turns and traveling moves that are led by the entire frame and body, or just by the arms. The focus for the guys will be on how to lead the different moves using their body (closed hold) or just the arms (open hold), while ladies will learn how to interpret the lead and respond in an accommodating yet sensuous manner.

Join us and indulge in the beauty of Bachata!
