Mary Chin

Mary has been a familiar face on the dance floor, except in the last few weeks. Stationed in Beijing for work, Mary now rubs shoulders with the salseroes in China. Although she's not out with us at Union, she keeps us abreast of the China salsa scene with her candid, tongue-in-cheek messages. Here's what Mary has to say:

"For the past three months, I’ve had the privilege of being in Beijing and experiencing their Salsa scene. It’s pretty new, perhaps around six years old. Even though the overall standard is not as high as Singapore’s, I admire their enthusiasm and fun-loving attitude here. The dance floor is crowded with people enjoying themselves even when the DJ puts on lots of Cha Cha, Merengue, pop and even Bhangra! (yes, the music mix here can be very unpredictable).

One thing I appreciate is that dance is truly a universal language.. Whether it’s LA style, New York Style, Cuban Style, or Anyhow Style- as long as you and your partner are having fun, that’s all that matters."
How long ago was it since you first started salsa dancing? And where was it?
About a year ago, with Two left Feet.
What made you decide to pick up salsa?
Fell in love with it 4 years ago when I first saw Wendy (Yee) dancing.
How did you hear about Two Left Feet?
Wendy.
What do you think is the best thing about salsa?
Every dance is never the same.
What was the best experience you’ve ever had on the dance floor?
Spinning more than 8 rounds without even knowing it. Ha ha!
What was the most embarrassing experience you’ve ever had on the dance floor (please use pseudonyms)?
This guy I was dancing with here in China was holding onto me as I did my shines (facing him). I was gracefully doing that bodyroll move up from squatting position when I knocked my face into his protruding belly! Morale of the story? Make sure your guy doesn't have a beer belly when you're doing shines!!
Describe your perfect dance partner.
Fun, interactive, takes care of you on the dance floor, and good-looking- just like my hubby!
How has your life changed since you picked up salsa?
I now can't count properly from one to ten. It's always 1,2,3,5,6,7...
What is your salsa goal for this month?
To learn some nice hand styling moves from this lady instructor in China.
