the day, Kelvin is an engineer who works on mechanical designs. By night he
changes into a different person, a salsero who
enjoys expressing his creativity through salsa dancing. Besides
being a wonderful dancer, Kelvin is also a fantastic singer and
excellent inline-figure skater. Certainly a man with many
talents. This is what Kelvin has to say: |

How
long ago was it since you first started salsa dancing? And where was
it?
I started in December 2003 at Two Left Feet; still going back for the
free refresher courses once in a while. I remember the first studio was
at StarDus or something. Somewhere near River Valley. I loved that
studio and the classmates we had. So happening. |
What made
you decide to pick up salsa?
My wife wanted to learn salsa and I think I didn't want to, and still
don't want to forego the time that I can spend with her. So I decided to
give it a try. Besides I have to keep an eye on any cheeky guys out
there. |
How did
you hear about Two Left Feet?
Basically, my sister Wendy started the school with a few of her loony
friends. Wonder who they might be...... |
What do
you think is the best thing about salsa?
a) It is spontaneous. Unless in competitions and performance, no need
to remember choreography.
b) The music is nice.
c) We get to meet new friends all the time when we come out dancing at
the club.
d) Besides enjoying moving to the music, it is like a game, because when
you dance with people you've never danced with, it is like....."hmmmm....don't
know if I can lead her into this move, that move, or not?" It is
exciting and challenging.
But the main thing is still
enjoying the dance itself. |
What was
the best experience youve ever had on the dance floor?
The first time I danced with a stranger, and it seemed like she could
follow most of my lead. And she did not have weird facial expressions
when I danced with her ;P. I was just so glad I survived. It was a very
encouraging first dance. |
What was
the most embarrassing experience youve ever had on the dance floor
(please use pseudonyms)?
I tried to do a single turn on a friend, but she went into a double. So
my hand which was on its way to go into a close hold, grabbed not her back,
but her 'you know what'.... |
Describe
your perfect dance partner.
Very importantly, a) she must try to have fun, b) she must not be
expressionless, so at least I know if she is enjoying the dance.
Technically, a) tension must be there when required, and constant
connection will be great, b) turns must be sharp and stable, c) rhythm
must flow with the music.
No matter how sharp her turns turns are for
fast music, if the music is a slow number, please turn slow with the
music (needs lots of control); it simply makes a slow salsa look much
smoother and romantic as I personally think it should be.
Last but not least, a good dancer who is able to cover up my mistakes
and prevent me from looking like an idiot is the best.....hahaha! |
How has
your life changed since you picked up salsa?
Feels uneasy, if I don't go to the salsa club at least once in a week. |
What is
your salsa goal for this month?
I would say for the rest of this year, I am targeting to
be able to lead 3 turn patterns effectively that I have learnt from the
Super Mario DVD. |
